MAHATMA GANDHI

Mahatma Gandhi, born Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, India, was a key figure in the Indian independence movement against British rule. After studying law in London, he practiced in South Africa, where he developed his philosophy of non-violent resistance, or Satyagraha.

Returning to India in 1915, he led major movements such as the Non-Cooperation Movement, the Salt March, and the Quit India Movement, advocating for civil rights and social reforms. His principles of truth and non-violence not only shaped India’s struggle but also influenced global civil rights movements.

Despite his efforts, India was partitioned in 1947, and he was assassinated on January 30, 1948, by a Hindu nationalist. Gandhi’s legacy as a symbol of peace and non-violent resistance endures, with his birthday celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti and the International Day of Non-Violence.
